Buffalo Promise Neighborhood board member to keynote Memorial's Black History Celebration

A leader in efforts to strengthen developmental and educational outcomes for children in the Buffalo area will be the keynote speaker Feb. 19 at the ninth annual Black History Celebration at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center, 621 Tenth St.

Yvonne Minor-Ragan, Ph.D., a member of the board of Buffalo Promise Neighborhood, will address the event's theme, "Become a Champion of Change," during an 11:30 a.m. luncheon program. Ragan is the former principal of the Westminster Community Charter School and is a member of the John R. Oishei Foundation board of directors.

"Getting to the Heart of the Matter," a healthy living presentation by Jeffery Maguire, D.O., and nurse practitioner Michelle Sneed, will precede the luncheon at 10:30 a.m. Health screenings and wellness information also will be provided.

The Black History Celebration will include special community service recognition to W. Lee Whitaker and Carlton Cain.

Whitaker, a retired public housing manager with the Niagara Falls Housing Authority and a STAR domestic violence instructor, has served as a member of the NFC Development Corp., the lending arm for the city. She continues to serve as a commissioner for the Niagara Falls Human Rights Commission.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Cain has been employed with the Niagara Falls Police Department for more than 25 years. Cain is a former president of the Niagara Falls Boys and Girls Club and has been an active volunteer at the local YMCA and the Niagara Police Athletic League, where he is a past board president and vice-president.

Students from Niagara Street School and the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Gospel Chorus will perform musical selections.

February is also heart month at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Among the scheduled activities:

•Chef Lamont Singletary will create a special heart-healthy lunch menu item Wednesdays at Memorial's Tenth Street Café.

•Cardiopulmonary Services Manager Melissa Rackmil will lead free hip-hop dance class: "For Good Health's Sake: Run, Jump & Shake," from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Medical Center Auditorium.

•Smoking cessation classes will be held from 2-3:30 p.m. Thursdays in the Niagara Wellness Connection Center on Memorial's sixth floor.

•Sunday, Feb. 14, will be celebrated as Go Red for Church Day. Area churches will share lifesaving information for women from the American Heart Association. Churches wishing to participate are asked to phone 716-285-2382.
