Lewiston Police officers responded to a check the welfare call Thursday on the 200 block of South Seventh Street that soon developed into a tense negotiation response.

Lewiston Police Capt. John Penzotti said officers encountered a 31-year-old male in an apartment who was despondent, uncooperative and in possession of knives. Following conversations with Lewiston Police, the man went upstairs in his residence and proceeded to barricade himself in a bedroom. Responders from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office and State Police then arrived on the scene to continue negotiations with the man.

The NCSO Emergency Response Team arrived soon after and was eventually able to safely remove the man from the residence.

"The ERT team was able to breech the bedroom door and they introduced gas into the room," Lewiston Police Chief Frank Previte said. "At that point, the ERT officers entered the room and took the man into custody."

The unidentified subject was later taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.
