Judith A. Nolan Powell, a retired executive from HSBC Bank and a long-time supporter of Catholic schools, received the Bishop's Medal Jan. 28 for her dedication to Catholic education. Nolan Powell received the award from the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone, bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, during the 2016 Celebration of Catholic Education dinner at the Buffalo Convention Center.

Nolan Powell, the oldest of six children, grew up in Niagara Falls and attended the former St. John de LaSalle Parish grammar school and Madonna High School. She continued her education at SUNY Geneseo and began teaching at Niagara Catholic High School while pursuing a master's degree from Buffalo State College.

She switched from teaching to become the public relations director at Trocaire College before joining Marine Midland/HSBC bank for a long and accomplished career in that field.

Throughout Nolan Powell's life, volunteering and a commitment to Catholic education were extremely important to her. She served on the board of Catholic education for the Diocese of Buffalo and was a member of the marketing committee that initiated the initial Catholic Education Dinner more than 15 years ago.

Nolan Powell remains active as chairwoman of the board of directors at Niagara Catholic, and she is on the foundation board of the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

Among her many accomplishments and honors, she was named a Woman of Distinction by the Niagara Gazette and was honored as the Women's Business Advocate for Western New York by the U.S. Small Business Association.

A devout Catholic, Nolan Powell attends St. Stephen Church on Grand Island and St. Vincent DePaul parish in Niagara Falls. She resides on the Island with her husband, William.
