Hospital to lend a hand in saving WNY lives

Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will host a community blood drive with Unyts, Western New York's only organ, eye, tissue and community blood center, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Thursday in Auditorium A & B, 621 10th St., Niagara Falls. The community is encouraged to stop out and donate blood that will go to help the many patients in need at our local hospitals.

Since beginning collections in June 2007, Unyts has already become the primary supplier of blood products for Kaleida Health, ECMC, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and Wyoming County. Local hospitals need to maintain an adequate supply of blood for emergency situations and it is up to Unyts' community blood service and the generosity of donors to help provide safe levels of blood inventory.

By giving blood with Unyts, participants work to ensure family, friends, neighbors and other members of the community have blood available when they need it. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, contact Judy Villani at 716-278-4440. Walk-ins are always welcome.

Headquartered in downtown Buffalo and established in 1981, Unyts is among the leading procurement organizations in the U.S., and is one of the only eight centers nationwide to house organ, eye and tissue procurement in one location. With the addition of community blood service, Unyts has become the first organization of its kind nationwide.

Unyts operates as a nonprofit serving the eight counties of Western New York and works to assist donor families, coordinate the donation process and increase knowledge and awareness within the community regarding transplantation.
