5th annual guest bartending event held in Lockport

A "Tips for Teens" fundraiser to benefit New Directions Youth & Family Services will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, at The Penalty Box Bar & Restaurant, 34 Chestnut St., Lockport.

Organizers Christi and Brian Stevens and Kelley Devine will guest bartend the event, which will be held during the Bills vs. Eagles game. All tips, raffle monies and contributions will benefit the teen residents at New Directions' Wyndham Lawn campus.

In addition to a viewing of the football game, the fundraiser will feature music, raffles and football squares. Donations of new toys, sneakers, athletic gear, duffel bags and comforters appropriate for children ages 13-18 also will be accepted.

For the past four years, Christi and Brian Stevens and Devine have organized an annual guest bartending fundraiser to benefit various causes and organizations in honor of Christi's father, Tim Oehmler. He was actively involved in the Western New York community and died unexpectedly in May 2011 at age 55 while training for the Corporate Challenge.

He was a member of Buffalo Checkers Running Club and served as the director of the kidney transplant unit at Buffalo General Hospital. He was a husband, father, son and grandfather. Previous fundraiser events in remembrance of Oehmler have benefited transplants ("Tips for Transplants"), Mercy Flight ("Tips for Transportation") and a local soup kitchen ("Tips for Turkeys").

"These annual fundraisers have given us the opportunity to raise money for a local organization during the holidays in remembrance of my father, who was so committed to our community," Christi said. "We believe strongly in the mission of New Directions and are excited this year's fundraiser will benefit the very deserving teenagers at the Wyndham Lawn campus."

"It's encouraging to see such tremendous generosity from the Lockport community each year for the organizations we have supported through this fundraiser," Devine said. "We hope to carry out this tradition for many years to come."

New Directions' Wyndham Lawn campus, located in Lockport, provides co-ed residential treatment for 35 children. The 70-acre, park-like campus features modern, comfortable cottages and a staff focused on building strong relationships with youth and families.
