New nurse call system will enhance patient care at Lewiston hospital

With its new affiliation just five months old, Catholic Health and Mount St. Mary's Hospital have announced a major technology investment to enhance patient care and support nursing staff at the Lewiston hospital. Catholic Health recently completed a multiphase project to install a state-of-the-art nurse call system throughout the hospital. The $450,000 system offers advanced communication and safety features resulting in faster response times, streamlined workflow and greater efficiencies, benefitting patients and staff.

"One of our first agenda items, when Mount St. Mary's joined Catholic Health, was to ask nursing leadership and staff what we could do to enhance their ability to care for patients," said Joe McDonald, president and CEO of Catholic Health. "A new nurse call system was at the top of the list. This significant investment, along with the reopening of a nursing unit to add more private rooms at the hospital, will support the high quality care already available at Mount St. Mary's."

Nurse call systems are not new to hospitals; however, today's technology offers many advantages for patients and staff. With the new system at Mount St. Mary's, nurses carry wireless phone devices to receive instant alerts when patients press their call buttons. They can then respond immediately through two-way voice communication to access the patient's needs before they enter the room. This helps expedite care as well as reduce noise from overhead pagers. The system also features easy-to-operate alert buttons for patients, various medical alarms and monitors, and other important safety functions.

"Communication between patients and nurses is critical to delivering high-quality care, and we simply outgrew our current system," said Gary Tucker, FACHE, president and CEO of Mount St. Mary's. "Catholic Health recognized what a system of this caliber would mean to our hospital and provided us the resources to get it up and running as quickly as possible."

The new nurse call system has been installed in the hospital's emergency department and medical/surgical patient care units. Catholic Health is looking to expand the system to other areas of the hospital.

"With this system, our nurses can be more mobile, yet readily accessible, which will have a positive impact on patient care and safety," said Barbara Bucci, RN, chief nursing officer at Mount St. Mary's. "By improving communication and efficiency, our nurses will be able to spend more time at the bedside doing what they do best: providing quality patient care."

Mount St. Mary's joined Catholic Health in July, helping to expand the health system's reach to residents throughout Niagara County.
