Recently, the Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, Lockport City School District, YWCA of the Niagara Frontier and the United Way of Greater Niagara/Martha Beeman Foundation partnered to provide a much-needed fence at the John Pound School in Lockport.

The fence was installed this fall so children attending programing at the John Pound School were able to play on the playground. Prior to the installation of the fence, children from the BHSC could not go outside and play on the playground.

BHSC approached the United Way for support of the fence to help young people be able to go outside. The fence ensures the safety of more than 200 children participating in the BHSC and YWCA universal pre-K program on a daily basis.

The United Way, which administers the Martha Beeman Foundation, was able to provide a one-time grant to install the fence.

"Just seeing the smiles on the children's faces as they played on the playground lifted my spirits," United Way President Carol G. Houwaart-Diez said. "Anytime we can help children that, through no fault of their own, need a little assistance, if we can, we will."
