The fourth annual Michelle's Memorial 5k will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, in Middleport. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Middleport Firehall located on Main Street. The starting line will be close by on Mill Street. The course is sanctioned by USATF and will be along the historic Erie Canal. An awards ceremony and post-race party will take place immediately following the race at the Middleport Firehall.
Michelle's Memorial 5k proceeds benefit the Michelle A. Bewley Scholar Athlete Award. The accolade is given each year to a graduating senior at Royalton-Hartland Central High School who maintains a 90-plus average during his or her high school career, has participated in three sports each year, and in the music department. The awardee consistently displays courage, leadership, respect and a constant drive to better classmates and the school through efforts in academic, music and athletic programs.
Bewley graduated with the Royalton-Hartland Class of 1994. During her years in Roy-Hart, she was a member of the field hockey, swimming and track teams, as well as a member of student government, National Honor Society, the school orchestra and chorus, and countless other organizations, committees and groups. She was a relentless multitasker who loved every minute of it. She gave every bit of herself to her family, friends, classmates, teammates and co-workers.
Bewley was taken suddenly Jan. 6, 2006, as a result of a car accident.
