Nationally acclaimed author Mort Kondracke, writer of "Jack Kemp: The Bleeding-Heart Conservative Who Changed America," will be signing the recently published book at the Sabres Store at 2 p.m. today. Jimmy Kemp, Jack's son - and president of the Jack Kemp Foundation - will join Kondracke.

Copies of the biography, which focuses on Kemp's role in the American renaissance of the 1980s, will be available for purchase.

Jack Kemp was a United States Army veteran who served his country from 1958-62. During his time in the Army, he also began a professional football career that saw him join the Buffalo Bills in 1962. Kemp played seven years as the Bills quarterback, leading the team to the American Football League Championship in 1964 and 1965.

Immediately following his football career, Kemp was elected to congress and served Western New York in the House of Representatives from 1971-89. He left the House in 1989 to serve as secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George H.W. Bush. After Bush was defeated in the 1992 presidential election, Kemp was appointed by Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich to chair a commission on tax reform, which was later named the Kemp Commission. Dole selected Kemp as his vice presidential running mate in 1996, but incumbent President Bill Clinton defeated the ticket.

Kemp remained politically active until he succumbed to cancer in 2009 at the age of 73.
