Hard Rock hosts 'Living Ribbon' ceremony; Dyster proclaims October Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Cataract City

At a quarter to 8 p.m. Friday, about 100 people - mostly women, and many breast cancer survivors - joined together to form a "Living Ribbon" across the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls. Participating in Hard Rock Café Niagara Falls USA's PINKTOBER celebration, these pink pashmina-clad people linked arms in the battle against breast cancer, and to show support for those fighting the loathsome disease.

Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster welcomed the crowd.

"I know that this event means something different to each of us," he said. "There's three things, I think, that we're always trying to accomplish at this event. First of all, we're trying to remember those who have fought a battle in the past and have passed away - that their memory would serve as an inspiration to all who are fighting the disease today.

"The second thing, of course, that we want to do, is we want to encourage and support those who are currently involved in a struggle with breast cancer.

"Third, and let's not forget this, we want to celebrate all the survivors."

Dyster proclaimed October Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the city. He read, in part, "We encourage every citizen and visitor to join in supporting this observance, and get screened for this disease on a regular basis."

WKBW-TV Channel 7 reporter Desiree Wiley led a countdown to pink illumination across Niagara Falls. She shared that her aunt had been battling breast cancer.

Prior to the event, Claire M. Seveno, sales and marketing manager at Hard Rock Café Niagara Falls USA, said, "This is Hard Rock International's 16th annual PINKTOBER breast cancer awareness campaign, so it's a cause that we are all very passionate about. Every year, we invite our guests to help us raise funds and support breast cancer research to aid in eradicating a disease that affects millions."

A portion of the proceeds from Friday's event, which also included live music, food and drinks, will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
