The National Fire Protection Association notes nighttime fires can generate deadly gases such as carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, which can result in fatal consequences for sleeping family members if there is no advance warning. Therefore, the 2015 fire prevention theme has been designated "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep: Every Bedroom Needs a Working Smoke Alarm."

Fire Prevention Week from Oct. 4 through 11 will encompass many related activities on Grand Island, as well as in other communities nationwide. Grand Island Fire Co. firefighter and emergency medical services teams will visit Grand Island elementary schools Oct. 6, 7 and 8 to offer fire safety tips. Sidway Elementary School students will visit fire headquarters to gain first-hand exposure to fire company operations, on Oct. 9.

The weekly program events will wind up with the popular GIFC open house at fire headquarters from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.
