Grand Island Fire Chief Matt Osinski has announced that this year's fire prevention open house will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at fire headquarters, 2275 Baseline Road.

Assistant Fire Chief Omar Sortino, program coordinator, has arranged for multi-agency participation, which will include a firefighting and EMS display and demonstrations by the Grand Island Fire Co., Western New York Fire Service and local law enforcement.

Meanwhile, firefighter and EMS teams will visit Grand Island elementary schools to conduct Q-and-A safety sessions. Then on Oct. 9, Sidway Elementary School students will visit fire headquarters for a bird's eye view of fire company operations. All students will also receive entry blanks for the special "Ride to School in a Fire Truck" drawing to be held during open house activities.

A live fire demo will show how fast a small blaze can progress after ignition in a simulated household setting.

The GIFC Ladies Auxiliary will again provide refreshments, including a hot dog roast at a nominal cost, and also conduct a basket raffle.

Osinski said he hopes as many Islanders as possible can set aside some quality time to meet their GIFC volunteers and friends.
