The Aquarium of Niagara scored with its16th annual Winds Waves and Wines fundraiser at the Conference and Event Center Niagara Falls Thursday night.
The evening included offerings from the region's top wineries and restaurants set to the music of the Rod Nickson Project. Master of Ceremonies Aaron Mentkowski of WKBW Channel 7 spoke about the importance of the Aquarium of Niagara's capital campaign and DJ Pat Proctor entertained in the courtyard. There was a silent auction that included a one week wine tour for two through Cape Town and the wine regions of Africa, as well as a luxury one-week trip for four to sunny Mexico. This was also the first year the Aquarium of Niagara held a "Mega Raffle," where cash prizes totaled $15,000.
All Winds, Waves and Wines proceeds will go toward the $3.2 million capital campaign. "Join Our Journey" is centered on building a brand new Humboldt penguin exhibit and classroom.
"To make room for this much-needed addition, the entire first floor will be renovated with new and refurbished exhibits so virtually everything on our main level will be innovative and exciting to our visitors," Aquarium of Niagara Executive Director Gay Molnar said. "We are in the midst of preconstruction now and are set to start building the new, state-of-the-art exhibit and encounter classroom late this year or January 2016."
