North Tonawanda History Museum plans programs

Tue, Sep 1st 2015 07:00 am

The North Tonawanda History Museum, 54 Webster St., is planning two special programs for the fall.

At 2 p.m. Sept. 26, a program will focus on the North Tonawanda Police Department and another program, date to be announced shortly, will focus on the North Tonawanda Fire Department. The museum has exhibits on the history of both departments.

The former program will feature now-retired, long-time Chief of Detectives Capt. Gabriel DiBernardo sharing memories of the work he and his detectives did to solve the Dec. 3, 1997, murder of North Tonawanda businessman William Rickerson by Richard Matt.

Other North Tonawanda detectives and others who worked on solving the case following Rickerson's murder are invited to come share with DiBernardo.

Following the program, DiBernardo will show all attendees "Gabe" in the Police-Fire-Postal Workers Exhibit Hall. The mannequin wears the complete uniform DiBernardo was given when he was named a captain in 1970.

The other program will focus on the North Tonawanda Fire Department's successful battle against the August 1986 fire which, without firefighters' efforts, would have destroyed the G. C. Murphy store building which is now the permanent home of the North Tonawanda History Museum.
