Doucet announces re-election campaign

Fri, Aug 28th 2015 12:20 pm

Wheatfield Councilman Gil Doucet has officially announced his candidacy to seek re-election to the Wheatfield Town Board. He brings a wide array of support, including the endorsements of the Republican, Conservative, Independence and Working Family parties, as well as those of United Steelworkers Local 4-5025 and Iron Workers Local 9, which Doucet credits to his leadership, experience and results for the residents of Wheatfield.

"I am running for re-election because I want to continue to work with our residents to make Wheatfield an even better place to live. Wheatfield needs experienced leadership that responds to our residents as we continue to grow this great community," Doucet said. "As a councilman, I worked tirelessly to restore fiscal accountability to the town budget and improve upon the services for residents."

Doucet maintains that providing a better quality of life for residents is a top priority for him. He pointed to the recycling tote program, which reduced the cost of recycling and generated saving for residents, the elimination of the town highway tax and reduction in special district taxes for Wheatfield property owners, as key policy initiatives that put residents first.

"As a collective town board, we have really worked hard to peel back the layers of government that impede residents' quality of life; we want to make sure Wheatfield remains a viable community while retaining its town-like charm," Doucet said. "That's why it's very important to keep families, farmers, seniors, youths and business owners in mind as we continue to grow."

Doucet's record certainly speaks for itself. He fought for and passed a stringent ordinance that bans the spreading of human waste on land, advocated for a town-wide drainage study to help remediate flooding problems and helped secure matching grants to provide handicap-accessible restrooms, a walking path and trail at Fairmount Park.

"One of the biggest challenges is being able to provide strong leadership for a town that is continuously experiencing changes," Doucet said. "There is nothing more exciting than seeing the young families building a life here; that makes the job of our elected officials even more important and rewarding."

Community involvement is particularly important to Doucet. He has been an active member of St. Johnsburg Volunteer Fire Co. for more than 40 years, as well as a member of the Volunteer Firemen's Benevolent Association, Sons of American Legion Post 1451 and St. Jude the Apostle R.C. Church. Furthermore, you are likely to find Doucet actively participating in Cub Scouts, youth baseball and hockey and coaching the Niagara-Wheatfield club hockey team.

"There's so many positive things happening in this town that it's hard not to be involved. I love being a part of it," he said.

Doucet is retired from DuPont after 31 years. He is a graduate of Starpoint High School and Alfred State College and is available to his constituents on a daily basis. He has lived on Ward Road with his wife, Deborah, for more than 40 years. Deborah Doucet is a supervisor of nursing at DeGraff Hospital. Together, they raised four sons: Gilbert, Paul, Kevin and Jonathan. They have five grandchildren.
