Larry Helwig is pleased to announce his candidacy for re-election as councilman in the Town of Wheatfield. Helwig, a Republican, has the endorsement of the Republican, Independence and Conservative parties.

Helwig is proud to be part of Town Board team that lowered taxes five straight years and is working on lowering taxes for the sixth straight year.

A strong leader who delivers results for the Town of Wheatfield, Helwig is no stranger to fighting for the residents. Whether it is taking on big corporations like Time Warner Cable, insurance companies or New York state to recover over $600,000 in funds owed to Wheatfield, Helwig continues to put Wheatfield residents first.

"I firmly believe this town is something special; that's why you see all the development and neighborhoods growing, everyone wants to be a part of something special," he said. "That's why it's so important to have elected officials work on behalf of the residents; we always need to make sure quality of life is a top priority."

Helwig certainly has a distinguished list of success stories that he was able to accomplish as a councilman. Most notably, he worked with residents to adopt a local law banning the spreading of sewage sludge on land in Wheatfield, the strongest law in New York state.

Helwig has led the effort in obtaining $1.16 million Scenic Byways Grant for the River Road Greenway Trail; spearheaded the development of the new town website that will better serve the residents of Wheatfield (visit www.wheatfield.ny.us); is leading the fight against National Fuel Gas to require a high-pressure natural gas pipeline to be moved away from residential neighborhoods; promoted the Fairmount Park improvement grant to construct a new handicapped-accessible restroom and trails around the park to provide access to all ball diamonds; supported improvements to youth programs, youth camps, and a new mini park at the Youth Center; and supported a town recycling program that is one of the best in the county and has reduced garbage collection fees.

Helwig has worked closely with River Road residents to find an alternate location for a hiking path and coordinated an annual cleanup of Liberty Drive with Cub Scout Pack 833 for 24 years.

Helwig understands that saving taxpayers money is only one element of the position; another aspect is being an active partner in the community.

"The building blocks of every great community rest on serving our seniors, our youths and balancing the desire for development while protecting our farmers," he noted.

Helwig currently serves as a liaison to the Highway Department. He is the director of Niagara County Data Processing and was previously employed by Occidental Chemical Corp. for 23 years as a senior computer analyst. Prior to working at Occidental, he taught math at Tonawanda High School.

Helwig is a graduate of North Tonawanda High School, NCCC and Brockport State. He received his master's degree in math from Buffalo State College. Helwig is past director and coach of Cayuga Little League, past treasurer of Cub Scout Pack 833 and a member of LaSalle Sportsmen Club.

Helwig resides in Wheatfield with his wife Marianne (Peri). They have two adult children, Michelle and Jason.
