The New York State Department of Labor has released preliminary local area unemployment rates for July 2015. Rates are calculated following procedures prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The state's unemployment rate relies in part on the results of the current population survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York each month.

The state's private-sector job count increased by 189,000 from July 2014 to July 2015. In July 2015, the number of private-sector jobs in the state was 7,831,700, an all-time high. The state's private-sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York employers conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor's bureau of labor statistics.

In addition, between June and July 2015, the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.5 percent to 5.4 percent, its lowest level since July 2008.
