Wed for 70 years, couple shared deep commitment to volunteerism, community service

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by Commissioner of Senior Services Randy Hoak and enthusiastic seniors at the Alden Senior Center to honor Mr. and Mrs. Norman and Nancy Taylor as "Seniors of the Month" for August. Mr. Taylor accepted the honor for his wife, Nancy, who passed away last year. Until then, he was her inseparable partner for 70 years. Together in their wedded life, they volunteered at the Erie County Home, the Ewell Free Library and at numerous other community organizations.

"Norm and Nancy Taylor embodied a spirit of volunteerism and the desire to actively give back to their community, and while Mrs. Taylor has passed away, I am pleased to be here today to honor both her and Norm as Seniors of the Month for August 2015," Poloncarz said. "The Taylor's unfailing teamwork and selfless desire to help others, demonstrated in so many ways over the years, highlights their deep love for each other and for the people around them. They have had a tremendously positive impact on their community."

Hoak added, "Norm and Nancy have brought joy to thousands of people that many had forgotten. Their example and dedication to their community will live on through those they have taught and touched over the years."

High school sweethearts, the Taylors were married on Christmas Day, 1944. Mrs. Taylor volunteered at the gift shop in the Erie County Home for 30 years, and often joined in singing while Norm played the piano to entertain residents.

The Taylors also were fixtures at the Alden Presbyterian Church every Sunday, playing piano and singing with the choir. Additionally, they were active and involved volunteers at the Ewell Free Library in Alden, where Mr. Taylor served on the board of directors.

An Eagle Scout earlier in life, in 1986 Norm formed Boy Scout Troop 82, becoming its first Scoutmaster with help from the group's assistant leader - Nancy. The Taylors were presented with the Alden Chamber of Commerce Award in July 1998.
