Erie Canal Fishing Derby marks 25 years

The 25th annual Erie Canal Fishing Derby will kick off July 1 and run through July 12 along the 50 miles of the canal, from North Tonawanda to Albion.

More than $20,000 is available in prizes, including the grand prize of a boat, motor and trailer. Fifty tagged fish are released, with one worth $2,500, and the kids' division has daily prizes and the chance to win a canal trail bike.

There are seven divisions: small- and large-mouth bass, walleye, northern pike, bullhead, carp, sheephead and catfish.

Entry sites are Niagara Outdoors, 223 Witmer Road, North Tonawanda; Wiggeling Willies Bait Shop, 457 Oliver St., North Tonawanda; Gander Mountain, 880 Young St., City of Tonawanda; Les Allen Live Bait, 350 Hawley St., Lockport; Harrington's, 7963 Telegraph Road, Gasport; Middleport Sports Shop, 25 Main St., Middleport; and East Center Street Stop N Shop, 306 E. Center St., Medina.

Weigh stations are Niagara Outdoors, Wiggeling Willies, Les Allen Live Bait, Harrington's, Middleport Sports Shop and East Center Street Stop N Shop.
