Panepinto: "It's time the DOT get moving and put an end to this 20-year debate, once and for all."

State Sen. Marc Panepinto called for the results of the New York State Department of Transportation's latest review of the Scajaquada corridor Wednesday. The senator's renewed call for action comes one month after DOT officials issued a statement promising to analyze alternatives and release the results within "a few weeks," following the tragic death of 3-year-old Maksym Sugorovskiy.

With no update one month later, Panepinto said, "Enough is enough. The Department of Transportation has already had more than 20 years to analyze and develop alternatives for the Scajaquada corridor. To drag this bureaucratic process out another minute would be an insult to the Sugorovskiy family and the people of Western New York. They deserve the expedited results of this latest evaluation and to see those plans implemented for the safety of all residents. They deserve real action. It's time the DOT get moving and put an end to this 20-year debate, once and for all."

Following the May 30 accident that took the life of 3-year-old Maksym and injured his 5-year-old sister, Panepinto proposed the following plan for converting Route 198 from an expressway to a parkway:

  • Narrowed lanes with appropriate signage and traffic lights to ensure the new, permanent 30-mile-per-hour speed limit is being met
  • Landscaped median and roundabouts in line with the neighborhood's Olmsted heritage
  • Installation of bicycle and pedestrian lanes for increased accessibility to Delaware Park
  • Designation as an "urban arterial"

Panepinto represents the 60th Senate District, which includes parts of the City of Buffalo as well as communities in both the north and the south towns.
