Assemblyman John Ceretto joined a bipartisan effort Wednesday to extend the deadline for the adoption of teacher and principal evaluation regulations until Nov. 17. The bill (A.7303), which Ceretto is a multi-sponsor on, also seeks to enhance the evaluation and testing process school districts must implement.

"This legislation will provide some much-needed relief for teachers and school districts who have felt the burden of the implementation of the Common Core curriculum and its testing," said Ceretto, who is a former teacher in Niagara Falls. "I'm encouraged by the bipartisan support on this bill. It was only a matter of time before Assembly Majority members got their acts together and realized that our New York state teachers and students deserve more than Common Core."

This bill would extend the deadline for the adoption of teacher and principal evaluation regulations until Nov. 17 to ensure the Board of Regents has the necessary time to carefully consider input from educators, administrators and other stakeholders in New York's education system. The bill also would make certain changes to strengthen the testing and evaluation process, and release more test answers to the public so students can be better prepared for future tests.

"Hardworking students in New York state deserve better; they should not be denied necessary resources for a quality education due to elected officials putting politics before education. Passing this bill would be the first step in completely phasing out Common Core," Ceretto said.

Ceretto created a four-question survey about the bill, which is accessible on his Facebook page.
