Lewiston installs new flagpole at Dickersonville Cemetery

On Thursday, May 14, the Town of Lewiston installed a new flagpole at the Dickersonville Cemetery, located on the north side of Ridge Road - just west of Dickersonville Road. The telescoping aluminum pole is 20 feet in height, with a solar light attached that will help illuminate the flag after dusk. The pole was placed next to the new Dickersonville Cemetery sign that was installed last spring.

As the town recognized the latest cemetery improvement, Supervisor Dennis Brochey expressed his appreciation the flagpole was erected in time for Memorial Day weekend.

"Today, we stand here at the Dickersonville Cemetery to honor those who were a part of making Lewiston the proud community that it is," he said. "This dedication to our United States flag and flagpole is in remembrance of the patriotism, community spirit and the love they had for Lewiston. Lewiston will always be grateful."

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post No. 7487 Deputy Commander Larry Stephens pointed out the cemetery is the final resting place of many Lewiston veterans, dating back to the Revolutionary War. Each year, the VFW Post donates an American flag that is proudly flown at the cemetery.

Town Historian Bob Martinez said the Dickersonville Cemetery was established in 1854 from land donated by Isaac Woolson II. It originally contained 30 plots. In 1872, the cemetery expanded to its present boundaries, and it contains more than 1,000 plots. For many years, the cemetery was in an abandoned state. In 1983, the town assumed ownership.

Lewiston Town Clerk Donna Garfinkel said replacement of the flagpole is just one of the many planned improvements for the cemetery.

Cemetery plots are currently available and can be purchased at the town clerk's office. The cost is $300 for Town of Lewiston residents and $400 for the general public. A map of the cemetery can be found on the town website, www.townoflewiston.us. Information can also be obtained by calling the clerk's office at 716-754-8213, ext. 222 or 256.
