Emilie Fose of North Tonawanda was among the 27 students selected to attend this year's University of Dayton career immersion experience to Washington, D.C.

A partnership between the University of Dayton political science department and honors program, "Dayton2DC" offers an opportunity for students to network with University of Dayton alumni and explore career paths in the D.C. area.

"Part of the trip is about going places, but it is mainly about meeting people," said Daniel Birdsong, University of Dayton political science lecturer and trip coordinator. "The goal of the trip is to expose students to the variety of possibilities D.C. has to offer by connecting them with UD alumni in careers tied to government."

Birdsong said many students have found internships and job interviews from contacts made on past "Dayton2DC" trips.

Fose connected with alumni in the U.S. Capitol during the session "Flyers on Capitol Hill" plus alumni at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Department of the Interior, U.S. Agency for International Development and Department of Commerce, including Philip Hughes, former U.S. ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

Fose also visited George Washington University's Multicultural Student Services Center, the Department of State, Bread for the World, National Confectioners' Association, Meridian International, Catholic Relief Services, Plan International USA, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, American Bridge 21st Century and several news media outlets during the five-day trip in March.

"The program lifts the veil of possibilities in D.C., but the networking with UD alumni grounds the students in a path forward," Birdsong said. "What is more, students come away from the trip knowing that the community here on campus extends to the alumni network in D.C."

The University of Dayton is a top-tier, national Catholic research institution. It was founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary (the Marianists).
