Events for STEM/STEAM Day at Niagara Power Vista announced

In connection with STEM/STEAM Month, the New York Power Authority and WNY STEM will hold a STEM-STEAM Career Day from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Niagara Power Vista.

This free event is aimed at providing students of all ages and educators access to various exhibitors, educators and business representatives related to the STEM/STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) fields as well as provide interactive activities, programs and workshops.

Joining NYPA and WNY STEM as exhibitors are the University at Buffalo, Alfred State University, Niagara University, Penn Dixie, Computers for Children, Sail Buffalo, US First Robotics, EverFi, Future City, Explore and More Children's Museum, among others.

Scheduled presentations and workshops in the Power Vista include:

•10 a.m. Understanding how electricity gets to your house from a power plant, presented by Rao Fu, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of electrical engineering at the University at Buffalo.

•10:40 a.m.Get Ready! This Is Not Your Father's Science Learning Anymore, aimed at students in middle and high school as well as adults. This session will explain how STEM is different from traditional science learning. It is presented by Dr. Don Duggan Haas, the director of teacher programs at the Paleontological Research Institution and its Museum of Earth in Ithaca.

•11:20 a.m.A viewing of Underwater Dreams, a film, written and directed by Mary Mazzio, and narrated by Michael Pena. This is the story of how the sons of undocumented Mexican immigrants learned how to build an underwater robot from Home Depot parts and defeat engineering powerhouse M.I.T. in the process.

•12:15 and 1 p.m. Quiet In the Studio, an interactive digital-technology-based theater workshop. Students will rehearse and use digital technology to record their project. They will learn how to add music, sound effects and narration to complete their production. Annette Daniels Taylor, a playwright, poet, actor, teacher, singer and costumer, will present the workshop.

•1 p.m.The Ins and Outs of the Ice Boom, a presentation on the installation and removal of the ice boom for all ages by NYPA engineer Ed Barbiero.

•1:45 p.m.Industrial Origami, a program for students and adults that will show how paper folding can be applied both in mathematics and industry. The application will include simulation of airbags, large reflective telescope lenses, arterial stents and geometric constructions. Dr. Robert Rogers, a professor of mathematics at SUNY Fredonia, will present.

•2:15 and 3:45 p.m.Building STEAM - Blending Math, Art, and Technology workshop. Blending the art of math and technology using game-based learning tools and project-based learning. The workshop will touch on the foundations of digital literacy using active learning strategies. Participants will integrate game theory and a scoreboard. Alex Fernandez, a bilingual instructional technology consultant specializing in "Flipped Classroom Strategy," will present the workshop.

•3:15 p.m. Solar Decathlon GROW program at the University at Buffalo. Gain knowledge about this innovative project and how to be involved. Mary Kate Mooney will present the program.

Visitors are invited to enjoy the Power Vista's attractions, which include displays an interactive exhibits relating to the production of electricity, energy efficiency and the area's history, as well as unique views from the observation deck 350 feet above the Niagara River Gorge.
