Cuomo cites Gil Quiniones for his leadership in energy field

Gil C. Quiniones, president and CEO of the New York Power Authority, has been elected chair of the Electric Power Research Institute, the nation's leading organization devoted to research and development in the electricity field.

"Gil has been a key part of my administration's work to transform energy generation, transmission and distribution," Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. "Gil, in this new leadership role, will help EPRI further its efforts to develop innovative approaches to make the electric grid more resilient and efficient."

Quiniones, who was previously EPRI vice chair, succeeds Denis P. O'Brien, the CEO of Exelon Utilities. He will serve a four-year term.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the staff and board at EPRI, who are some of the brightest minds in energy," Quiniones said. "The electricity industry faces many challenges, and EPRI is well-positioned to offer meaningful solutions that will enable utilities and their customers to realize the potential of the integrated grid."

An independent, nonprofit organization, EPRI works internationally with utilities, scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia to address challenges in the electricity industry.

"From one chair to another, I offer my congratulations," said John R. Koelmel, chair of the NYPA board of trustees. "As head of the nation's largest state power organization, Gil has long been recognized for his thought leadership in the utility industry. This honor is further proof of that."

Quiniones was elected by the NYPA board as president and CEO in 2011, after first joining the Power Authority in 2007 as executive vice president of energy marketing and public affairs. He was previously senior vice president at the New York City Economic Development Corp., where he was the city's chief consultant on energy policy issues. Quiniones also worked 16 years at Con Edison in a variety of capacities.

Quiniones is vice chair of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and serves on the steering committee of the board for the Large Public Power Council. He also is NYPA's principal representative to the American Public Power Association.

"Gil has an impressive record of accomplishments in New York, and we are pleased to have him chair our board of directors," said Mike Howard, EPRI president and CEO. "Gil has a keen insight of industry issues and a strong belief that technology offers the best option to addressing the challenges faced by the electric industry. This makes him ideally suited to lead EPRI's board."
