National Volunteer Week celebrated April 12-18
Western New York residents turned out in droves for the first LiveNF Volunteer Fair held April 7 at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. The event was organized through Niagara University's ReNU Niagara program and Congressman Brian Higgins.
Forty registered organizations were on hand to welcome residents interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities in the City of Niagara Falls and across Western New York.
"This is more than a one-day event, it is the inspiration for a community movement to embrace what each one of us has to contribute, and use it to build on the momentum contributing to a new excitement in Niagara Falls," Higgins said.
"Volunteering is vital to the success of any community; it is one critical way we engage our fellow citizens in need, pouring out time, talent and treasure," said the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president of Niagara University. "Many charitable organizations rely on unpaid help to successfully deliver their services, which often involve supporting the most vulnerable among us. Walking hand in hand, we have the power to be the change in our local communities."
Residents who were not able to attend but are interested in sharing their skills, time and talent to help others and better the community are encouraged to reach out to a local organization. A list of those that participated in the volunteer fair is available below and at www.higgins.house.gov.
