"Mangia 4 Maya," a fundraiser for Maya Serra, daughter of Joel and Renee (Pietrangeli) Serra, will take place from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at Casa Antica Italian Restaurant, 490 Center St., Lewiston. Tickets are $25 and include food, live entertainment, a basket raffle, a 50/50 split and a chance to win gift certificates.
At the age of 13 months, Maya was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma - a rare solid tumor. The childhood cancer, which affects the nervous system, is only seen in about 600 kids in the U.S. each year. The long-term survival rate is 50 percent.
Maya has undergone extensive treatment, including chemotherapy and numerous surgeries. She struggles with side effects. Maya continues to receive treatment for cancerous lesions in her spine under the watch of medical professionals at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City and Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo.
This fundraiser will help Maya's family offset some costs, including travel and medical expenses.
