Guinness World Record attempt focuses on collection of 1 million pounds of unwanted electronics from April 20-25

In celebration of Earth Day 2015, Erie County is partnering with Advanced Technology Recycling to join in a nationwide effort to recycle as many as 1 million pounds of unwanted electronics from April 20-25.

County employees are participating in the challenge both to show their commitment to protecting the environment by recycling electronics in a safe manner and also to be a part of the effort to achieve a new world record for such an event. Last year, ATR was part of a nationwide effort along with other company sponsors that prevented more than 800,000 pounds of electronics from entering landfills.

"April brings a return to spring weather and a renewed focus on the environment, particularly on ways to protect it now and into the future," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. "Proper disposal of electronics is a good way to prevent toxins and heavy metals from entering landfills and waste streams, protecting our land and our water. Erie County accepts this challenge, and I encourage all county employees to take part by bringing their old, unwanted electronics to the Rath building for disposal. During this month and throughout the year, we must all do our part to keep Erie County green and clean."

Erie County employees will be able to recycle a variety of electronics, such as computers, laptops, monitors, cell phones, phone systems, keyboards and mice, stereo equipment, audio/video equipment, printers, fax machines, copiers, televisions, PDAs and office electronics in ATR containers located in the first floor lobby of the Rath building.
