The loss of a loved one is something that everyone will go through at some point in their lives, but can also be one of life's most difficult experiences. The Niagara Hospice bereavement team recently presented a seminar to the Erie Niagara Funeral Directors Association at UB's Center for Tomorrow.

The presentation was titled "Heavy Hearts, Helping Hands." The seminar provided insight into the experience of grief and loss and offered tips for how to support both bereaved adults and children.

The first hour included a brief description of hospice care, in which bereavement services play an integral role in the acceptance and healing process for both patients and family members. Laurie Johnston Stickney, LMSW, then explored how the journey of a patient and family through hospice care can shape their experience with loss and grief, and shared suggestions for how to support bereaved family members at this challenging time.

In the second hour, Lori Pusateri, MS, LMHC, presented about grief in children who often grieve differently than adults. She discussed some of the common reactions to grief in children as well as some tools to help adult family members support their children through the very personal grief journey.

Information about Camp Hope, a free bereavement camp for children who live throughout Western New York, was included. Participants learned the ways in which Camp Hope provides education and support to grieving children, and teaches them positive ways of coping with their grief feelings.

"We are so very grateful to the Erie Niagara Funeral Directors Association for hosting and sponsoring us, as well as for their generous donation to Camp Hope," Niagara Hospice Bereavement Services Manager Jennifer Amor said.

Mike Cushman of the Erie Niagara Funeral Directors Association presented a $500 donation to Camp Hope Director Lori Pusateri.

"We are so fortunate to offer Camp Hope at no cost to families, thanks to generous donors and sponsors," Pusateri said. "This donation will go a long way in helping our children work through their grief in a healthy way."
