Congressman Brian Higgins announced Roswell Park Cancer Institute researcher Dr. Xuefang Cao has received a five-year, $2.01 million award from the National Cancer Institute to develop better therapies for blood cancers.

"This award, once again, represents the confidence the National Cancer Institute has in Roswell Park Cancer Institute and role of Roswell Park's researchers in identifying the next best treatments in cancer," Higgins said.

"This grant will allow us to develop new intervention strategies designed to improve the effectiveness of bone marrow transplantation for treating leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers," said Cao, an assistant member of the department of immunology at Roswell Park. "Our hope is that these new approaches will lead to better survival and improved quality of life for patients with hematologic cancers."

Cao was awarded first-year funding of $401,456 to study a pathway that white blood cells use to generate immune responses. The federal funding will support both preclinical and clinical research.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society estimated 156,420 people in the U.S. were expected to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2014, and more than 1.18 million people are living with or in remission from a form of blood cancer.

Higgins also recently introduced H.Res 174, a resolution that supports the designation of the month of March 2015 as "National Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month."
