County clerk program provides savings to area veterans

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced he will bring a "Thank-A-Vet" outreach event to Grand Island. The event will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, at the Nike Base Community Center, located at 3278 Whitehaven Road.

At that time, the clerk's office will issue discount cards to honorably discharged veterans who file their original DD-214 (discharge papers) with the Erie County clerk's office.

Veterans can use the clerk's "Thank-A-Vet" discount card at over 1,000 participating local businesses that have agreed to honor the card with a discount on purchases or services throughout Erie County. The clerk's office lists Grand Island Dance Center, HIZAIR Hair Salon, Island Prescription Center, Rhino-Tees Custom Apparel, Niagara Falls KOA, American Family Dental Group, Island Dental LLPC, Eddie's Art Shoppe/Your Framing Place, McMahon's Family Restaurant, Pizza Amoré and Flower a Day among those Island businesses participating in the program.

"My office continues our effort to recognize the service and sacrifices made by Erie County veterans through this important program," Jacobs said. "We are pleased to work with town Supervisor Mary Cooke in order to provide a convenient location for veterans to place their DD-214's on file with the county clerk's office."

For the veteran, filing discharge papers is free of charge, and certified complimentary copies of recorded discharges are made for veterans or their immediate families whenever needed. Original discharge papers are proof of military service, and can be used to establish eligibility for a variety of benefits, including property tax exemptions and civil service credits.
