The New York Press Association Foundation reminds students that the application deadline is fast approaching for its paid summer internship program. The program gives qualified college students the opportunity to hone their skill sets in preparation for a career in community journalism.

Students must apply to a NYPA member affiliate prior to the March 1 filing deadline to be considered.

A total of 20 internships are being offered throughout the state for the eight-week program.

Applications can be submitted to Niagara Frontier Publications, a NYPA weekly community newspaper group that includes the Grand Island PennySaver, Niagara-Wheatfield Tribune, Island Dispatch, and Lewiston-Porter Sentinel plus www.wnypapers.com.

The newspaper will interview chosen candidates, select the candidate of their choice and forward that application to NYPA.

NYPA in turn will conduct a random drawing this spring of all submitted applicants and select 20 interns. The participating newspaper will be notified and will then arrange the summer schedule directly with the intern.

Students who are accepted into the program will earn a net stipend of $2,500 for the eight-week internship.

The deadline for forwarding applications to NYPA is March 1. Visit the NYPA website, www.nynewspapers.com, for more information on the internship program.
