Lewiston Town Clerk

On Nov. 26, Town of Lewiston Receiver of Taxes and Assessments Joan Brandel Stephens retired after 33 years of dedicated service to the Town of Lewiston. Since her departure, the tax/water office has continued to provide the same efficient, friendly and professional service as it did under her leadership. Upon Stephens' retirement, the clerk's office and the tax receiver's office discussed consolidating the two departments.

The idea was proposed to the Town Board, and the board determined it was in favor of moving forward with consolidation. The town attorney drafted Local Law No. 6 - 2014, which would abolish the elected position of receiver of taxes and assessments held by the recently retired Stephens. With this, the duties of that office would then transfer to the office of the town clerk. The consolidation of the offices will not eliminate any positions currently staffed and will result in annual savings of approximately $40,000.

As any resident who has come to pay a town/county tax bill, water bill, apply for a building permit or any other service provided at the Lewiston Town Hall can attest, we have maintained the same level of efficiency since Stephens' retirement. You can trust that our quality of service, efficiency and friendliness has, and always will, continue to be our primary goal, no matter what structural changes our departments undergo.

A special election is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14, at Lewiston Town Hall. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents are encouraged to vote on the adoption of Local Law No. 6 - 2014. The complete text of said local law can be obtained at either the town clerk's office or on the town website, www.townoflewiston.us.

More information will be circulated as the special election approaches. Do not hesitate to contact either of the associated offices at Town Hall with any questions you may have. We can be reached at 716-754-8213, ext. 222, or ext. 235.
