Application period for certain NEH seminars and stipends will soon close

Congressman Brian Higgins announced two upcoming deadlines for educators and authors applying for funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The deadlines for NEH-funded summer seminars and institutes and the new public scholar grant program fall this week.

"Education in the humanities is essential to the progress of our country," Higgins said. "These courses and stipends encourage critical thinking and creative dialogue about how to improve and enrich our communities."

Through their summer seminars and institutes, the NEH provides opportunities for school, college and university educators to take part in the in-depth study of a specific topic in the humanities. The courses range from one to five weeks and take place at colleges and universities around the world.

The application period closes today. For more information about specific programs and application instructions, visit http://www.neh.gov/divisions/education/summer-programs.

The public scholar grant program is a new NEH initiative that aims to support well-researched books meant to engage a broad readership. Participants will receive a stipend of $4,200 per month for six to 12 months, with the maximum award being $50,400 for a 12-month period. Applicants must have been published previously. The final day to apply for this program is Tuesday (tomorrow). More information about requirements and application instructions can be found at http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/public-scholar-program.

NEH grants are typically awarded to museums, libraries, colleges, universities, public television and radio stations, cultural institutions and individual scholars. Created as an independent federal agency in 1965, the 2015-16 year marks the NEH's 50th anniversary of educating and engaging the public in the study of the humanities.
