State Sen. Marc Panepinto said there is a need for increased consumer awareness and protection as New Yorkers head into the 17th annual National Consumer Protection Week.

"As we slowly but surely exit the winter season, consumer activity across this great state will inevitably start to pick up," he said. "With this boost comes an excellent opportunity to generate awareness around the increasingly predatory practices and scams that threaten the security of our financial markets. National Consumer Protection Week is that opportunity."

National Consumer Protection Week is a federal education initiative led by the Federal Trade Commission and periodically re-established by presidential proclamation. Its purpose is to raise consumer awareness about identity theft, unsafe and recalled products, predatory financial practices, scams and constructive financial strategies to help Americans avoid criminal schemes and make sound decisions about products and services. NCPW partners include the FTC, FBI and the New York State Department of State division of consumer protection, which provides consumers with services year-round.

"Here in New York, the state watchdog agency known as the division of consumer protection provides multiple resources and safeguards, shielding consumers from unscrupulous practices ranging from credit card identity theft to deceptive mortgage lending to unregulated utility rate hikes, to name a few," Panepinto said. "I also encourage the constituents of the 60th district to contact my office should they have any concerns regarding these practices or troubleshooting local consumer protection issues."
