The Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District began its search for a new superintendent Tuesday night at a special board meeting.

The news comes on the heels of the announcement current Superintendent Lynn Marie Fusco was offered a job as superintendent of Erie-1 BOCES.

"I'm very, very honored to have been offered the position, but we still have a few steps left to go," Fusco said, noting she will not make the move until the end of the 2014-15 school year. "It's very bittersweet, because I do love it here. It's a great district and we've come a long way in a short time."

The meeting was scheduled with less than a week's notice, which board President Steven Sabo said was due to the board trying to expedite the process and find a new superintendent by the end of the school year so Fusco's replacement can start right away.

"I hate the fact that she's leaving because we've grown very accustomed to her here and she's done tremendous things for our district," Sabo said. "But we're very proud of her. ... She's going to definitely use her skills to help out at that level statewide, not just in Erie-1."

After an hour-and-a-half executive session, the board returned to the public ready to vote on a resolution to begin their search. In the end, they approved a deal to hire Howard Smith of School Leadership LLC to guide the search for $13,500 compensation and additional expenses as approved by the board.

A second special meeting on the search will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, in the Adult Learning Center.
