Hot Mix Asphalt Association Recognizes DPW with 2014 Showcase Award

The Erie County Department of Public Works has garnered statewide recognition for its innovation in paving technology after being named the 2014 HMA Showcase Award winner by the Hot Mix Asphalt Association, which promotes the use of hot mix asphalt for multiple paving purposes. The Erie County DPW was honored along with partners Occhino Corp. and County Line Stone for their recent work on the overlay of Hopkins Road in Amherst, which used asphalt imbued with strength-enhancing fibers on the northbound lane and polymer-modified asphalt on the southbound lane.

"I want to congratulate Commissioner Loffredo, the Erie County Department of Public Works, and their partners on this well-deserved recognition. This award underscores our commitment to providing the best roads possible, as well as identifying new methods to achieve that," Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz said. "Erie County's weather and traffic provide a lot of wear and tear on roads, so it is good to see that we are leading the way in exploring better ways to protect and preserve them."

Sections of the roadway will be compared over time to assess each type of product and its subsequent service life for durability and cost. Data from the Hopkins Road project will be shared with agencies around New York as they evaluate their own paving processes.

The Erie County DPW is the project owner and is award recipient along with project contractor Occhino Corp. and project supplier and awarding producer County Line Stone.
