Mount St. Mary's Hospital is holding a day of "Celebrating Excellence" on Tuesday.

Hospital President and CEO Judith Maness said the celebration is to recognize the work of the staff and physician team at Mount St. Mary's who have just completed a year of strong financial performance, important quality achievements, and providing high-quality care to its patients.

"This past year has been a tremendous, positive experience at Mount St. Mary's with growth in inpatient, outpatient, maternity and other services," Maness said. "Not only has the community shown its trust in us with these increases, we have handled this growth in an efficient and effective manner. Our employee and physician team has been outstanding."

The celebration for associates will include entertainment and prize raffles.

"What makes the effort of the staff even more satisfying is that we did it while also preparing to join Catholic Health, which was announced last April," Maness said. "Preparations for this transition have taken a lot of work and extra effort, and it has been very rewarding. Our staff is meeting this important challenge, while continuing to provide outstanding care to our patients. They haven't missed a beat."

Since plans were first announced in April to have Mount St. Mary's join Catholic Health, the two organizations, along with Ascension Health - Mount St. Mary's current sponsor - have been working toward obtaining the needed governance, religious and government approvals to finalize the affiliation. Both Catholic Health and Mount St. Mary's are members of Ascension Health. Catholic Health also is a member of the Diocese of Buffalo and Trinity Health.

In September, Catholic Health filed a certificate of need with the New York State Department of Health to obtain the necessary state regulatory approval to assume ownership of Mount St. Mary's Hospital. In late November, the New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council approved the certificate. This approval marked another important step for Catholic Health to expand its presence in Niagara County. Other legal filings are expected in the coming months.

"We expect to have everything completed in the next six months," said Joe McDonald, president and CEO of the Buffalo-based health system. "We have an internal work group made up of Catholic Health and Mount St. Mary's leadership that is developing a detailed timeline and transition plan to have the transfer of ownership completed by July 1, 2015."

With a common goal of having Mount St. Mary's Hospital take its place among the ministries of Catholic Health, the work group has developed a number of planning teams around such functional areas as information technology, human resources, finance, medical affairs and communications.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we have good teams in place and support from everyone involved," Maness said.
