You are never too young to start making a difference in your community. That is the lesson Lewiston-Porter students learned this Thanksgiving. Teachers, students and families from the Primary Education Center participated in the fourth annual Lew-Port Turkey Trot and raised $1,000 for Niagara Hospice.

The Turkey Trot was held at the Lew-Port High School track Nov. 25 before the start of school. More than 300 participants ran, walked and trotted around the track to support the event. The trot kicked off with music from the high school band and encouragement from the high school cheerleaders. Paul Beatty Jr. and Race Management Solutions donated finish line services.

In the weeks leading up to the event, students sold turkey "feathers" for a dollar each to raise money for Niagara Hospice. First-grader Patrick Nowak raised an impressive $200 selling feathers to his family and friends.

Physical education teacher Cindy Sanoian, who helped organize the event, said, "It was a tremendously successful event, thanks to our students, families and support from across the district. It truly was a fun family event."
