The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., Niagara University president, was in Okinawa, Japan, Sunday to sign a memorandum of understanding with Meio University.

The agreement denotes a formal interest between the institutions to collaborate on international student and faculty development initiatives. It is anticipated students from Meio will study abroad at Niagara to pursue advanced degrees; however, some students will attend NU as undergraduates.

Meio University was established in 1994 as the only private institution of higher education in Okinawa. In 2010, it was reorganized as a public university and currently offers a diverse selection of undergraduate and graduate programs, including health and life sciences, nursing, liberal arts, tourism and business.

More than 2,000 students are presently enrolled at Meio University. The university's mission is "to prepare students to make a positive contribution to our international society."

"At the heart of our partnership with Meio University is a shared mission, which is to use service, teaching, research and all the resources of higher education to advance human progress and the development of a global learning environment and community," Maher said. "Although Meio is 20 years old, and NU is more than 150 years old, we celebrate the eternal values of Meio, which are peace, freedom and human progress."

During Maher's visit to Meio, he met with numerous students, faculty members and administrators, including Dr. Katsunori Yamazato, president; Dr. Eiki Senaha, honorary president; Dr. Yasuko Kinjo, vice president; and Mr. Toi Nakayama, chief officer of international exchange.
