The Grand Island Town Board issued a town proclamation in recognition of "Small Business Saturday," which will take place Nov. 29, the first Saturday after Thanksgiving and a day after "Black Friday."

In making the proclamation prior to conducting its normal business at Monday's monthly meeting in Town Hall, the board noted "a successful small business community is an essential part of our great quality of life on Grand Island as our local businesses create jobs, boost our local economy by generating tax revenues, and contribute to the preservation of the neighborhoods that compose the landscape of our Grand Island local economy and enrich its unique culture."

The board further noted small businesses employ more than one-half of the employees in the private sector in the U.S., and the patronage by local residents is essential for the success of local independent merchants.

"Small Business Saturday" was founded in 2010 by American Express to drive consumers to shop at local, independently owned businesses, and to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

The proclamation stated consumers spent $5.5 billion at small businesses on "Small Business Saturday" in 2013 and that, for every $100 spent at independently owned businesses, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll and expenditures.

The board proclamation urged "all residents to support local businesses that we value in our community by patronizing them on 'Small Business Saturday' and repeatedly throughout the year."

Pictured, Bob Piatek of State Farm insurance accepted the proclamation and thanked the board, saying, "It's great to promote what we believe is an important facet of this community."
