Lewiston-Porter Senior High School's International Student diploma program is now underway.

The high school is now able to recruit international students as tuition-paying F-1 Visa students who will pursue a State Regents diploma.

"We are the only public school in Western New York able to accept international students, and one of the few public schools in New York state to have this opportunity," said Amy Townsend, International Programs director and social studies teacher.

For 2014-15, Lew-Port has seven international students. For the next year, the school is able to accept up to 20 students.

"We need host families for these students; Lewiston-Porter is not able to dorm students on its campus like some private schools," Townsend said.

Host families will receive a $6,250 stipend to offset living expenses incurred while hosting the students.

"We are seeking families of Lew-Port students, Lew-Port employees or any family living in the Lewiston-Porter School District as a host," Townsend said. "This is also great opportunity for retirees or empty nesters."

Incoming international students will be Lew-Port students, picked up by the bus each morning. As tuition-paying students, they are eligible for all Lew-Port events and activities.

Lew-Port will host an informational meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, in the high school library. Those interested are asked to call 716-286-7263 to reserve a spot.
