Old Fort Niagara: Twelfth Night Ball set for Jan. 10

Old Fort Niagara invites the public to dance back in time to the 18^th century when "Twelfth Night" marked the most festive part of the holiday season. Twelfth Night celebrated Epiphany, the end of the 12 days of Christmas. Early Americans marked the occasion with feasting and dancing, a tradition that continues at the historic site's annual Twelfth Night Ball.

The event, held at the Fort Niagara Officers Club, features Georgian-era country dancing to live music, fine beverages and desserts. The celebration begins with the distribution of "Three Kings Cake," followed by the crowning of the king and queen of the ball. After a grand procession, participants learn and practice a series of the most popular country dances. Downstairs, guests enjoy an 18th century tavern, complete with songs and period games. The evening concludes with a grand illumination.        

Tickets to the event are $40 per person and must be purchased in advance by calling 716-745-7611. The ball begins at 7 p.m. and concludes at about 11:15 p.m. A dancing master will teach newcomers, so no previous country dancing experience is needed.

Proceeds from the event benefit Old Fort Niagara's educational programming.
