The Kiwanis K-Kids at Colonial Village Elementary School showed concern for the welfare of others this holiday season by gathering items for needy families in the area.

K-Kids is a worldwide club in which children learn leadership skills through service. Colonial Village Elementary School counselors Dawn Yeates and Jen Ertel head up this service-learning group and spoke to students about the value of helping those less fortunate. They suggested holding a food drive.

The students advertised around the school with posters about their mission and asked for food items for Thanksgiving and personal care items such as shampoo and toothbrushes. Other classes used artistic skills to create wrapping paper to make the boxes the items would be sent in more festive.

"We have awesome students. They are an amazing group of kids and do a lot of great things here," Yeates said. "They gathered over 200 items and organized the food by category and then boxed it up for delivery. We are very proud of how they pulled together to make the holiday nicer for many in our community."
