Academy Park attraction opens Dec. 5

The snow is now flying and signs of winter fun have begun to pop up in the area.

One of them is the Lewiston Family Ice Rink, which will return for its third year of operation next month in Academy Park.

Mike Dashineau, Town of Lewiston recreation director/parks superintendent, reported the Parks Department recently began construction on the seasonal ice rink. Workers are finishing building the warming house and decking that connects the indoor heated area to the ice rink itself.

"When finished, the ice rink will provide not only a great winter activity and exercise, but a base for all kinds of winter fun for kids and families," Dashineau said.

The rink will open to the public Friday, Dec. 5, coinciding with the Lewiston Christmas Walk happenings Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6-7. Dashineau said the rink will be alive with holiday music and special guests all weekend.

The Lewiston Ice Rink will have a slate of fun offerings over the holiday season and beyond.

Returning this year will be the popular "Skate with Santa" Christmas party Sunday, Dec. 21, where children can have lunch with Santa and then go for a magical skate. Other events include the New Year's Eve 8 p.m. kids balloon drop, and such programs as 8U hockey, "Learn to Skate" and a 3-on-3 hockey tournament.

Dashineau credited much of this activity to the help he received from the community that contributed to the rink's overall success.

"For the past two seasons, all of the heat in the warming house has been provided by a generous and selfless donation by Wendts Propane and Gas Services, who provided both the fuel and the heater used all season long," he said.

Others have come in the form of the various sponsorship opportunities offered. Last's year's support, coupled with a cold winter, permitted the rink to operate well into February.

"All of our special events and programs are made great through the generous donations of the Lewiston business community through the purchase of advertising at the ice rink," Dashineau said.

The Lewiston Ice Rink is seeking businesses or individuals to take an active role in its success. To purchase signs or advertisements, contact Dashineau at 716-754-8213, ext. 254, or email [email protected].

Those interested in helping also can go to the Lewiston and Porter Youth Athletics website at www.LewPortSports.com and click on the "Become an Ice Rink Sponsor" tab.

"Any level of support is appreciated and recognized," Dashineau said.

The Lewiston Family Ice Rink will host an opening night dinner Thursday, Dec. 4, "to honor all of our sponsors and friends who make the rink a success every year." Tickets are being sold as a fundraiser for the rink and cost $25.

For tickets to the dinner and more information, contact Dashineau or call Lewiston Town Hall at 716-754-8213.
