Two coaches join athletic staff

Niagara Catholic Jr./Sr. High School has added two new coaches to its athletic staff this academic year: head boys basketball coach Giulio Colangelo and boys soccer coach Dave Socha.

Colangelo graduated from Niagara Catholic. He said he is looking forward to the opportunity. "As an alumnus, it's an honor to return to the school that provided me my start in basketball. Although this position presents some challenges, I am optimistic about the future of this program."

Colangelo has degrees from Fredonia State College, Niagara University and Canisius College. He has several years of coaching experience and was named BCANY Section VI Coach of the Year in 2010. The basketball team will play its first game Dec. 6 against Wilson. The game starts at 4:30 p.m. and will be held at Niagara Falls High School.

Socha has 32 years of playing experience and 10 years of coaching experience under his belt. He was the assistant coach of the women's soccer team at Niagara County Community College. Socha is currently a parent and president of the athletic boosters at Niagara Catholic.

"The team graduated one player from last year. This is an experienced group, and I expect a lot of good things from them," he said. "I'm excited to be working with the boys."

The soccer team just finished up its season with a record of 8-9-2.
