On Saturday, Nov. 1, the Aquarium of Niagara revealed the official name of "Pup2014," its newest harbor seal: "Cruz."
Cruz is a 6-month-old harbor seal who was abandon at birth by his mother probably because he is completely blind due to degenerative eye disease. Found on a beach near Sausalito, California, by The Marine Mammal Center, Cruz was brought to the Aquarium of Niagara earlier this fall. After being quarantined for 30 days, he now shares the outdoor seal pool with 34-year-old Sandy, the oldest harbor seal at the Aquarium of Niagara.
The harbor seal pup was the subject of a public naming contest, allowing participants to be entered for a chance to become his "Aquaparent" for a year. Voters were able to choose from one of four names: Bart, Jax, Cruz or Moe via Facebook or in person. Marie Foth was named "Aquaparent." (photos by K&D Action Photo & Aerial Imaging)
