City Mission still needs donations to help feed families this Thanksgiving

With less than 30 days left to Thanksgiving, the Buffalo City Mission needs the community's help in collecting turkeys for meals serving program residents, shelter guests and those in the community who are in need. This year's goal is 3,000.

"Thanksgiving is a time for reflecting on what we have to be grateful for, and we make it our goal to leave none in our community hungry on this special day. We are delighted to be offering warm meals through the comfort of neighbors to those in need in the Buffalo area," said Stuart Harper, Buffalo City Mission executive director. "It is our hope that the happiness shared on this day may pave the way for optimism for our residents in the coming year."

In the coming weeks, volunteers and staff will prepare and deliver thousands of dinners to homebound families and senior citizens through the City Mission's "Turkey Express" program. Additionally, hundreds of shelter guests will celebrate Thanksgiving with a meal prepared using donated turkeys with plenty of fixings.

Through the City Mission's outreach ministry program, turkeys also will be provided to local area church partners in Western New York, so they may distribute turkeys this holiday season to families and individuals in need within their communities.

The City Mission encourages holiday volunteer participation to all Buffalo-area residents. Serving those in need can be a very rewarding experience. To learn more about volunteering, contact THE volunteer office at 716-854-8181, ext. 408, or visit www.buffalocitymission.org

Donations off turkeys can be dropped off at the Buffalo City Mission Men's Community Center, located at 100 E. Tupper St., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays between now and Nov. 24.

In 2013, the City Mission served more than 200 people at its Thanksgiving community meal and delivered more than 4,800 meals to the poor and homeless throughout Western New York through its "Turkey Express" program.
