Local departments encouraged to apply

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the opening of the application period for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's fiscal year 2014 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3. The application period closes at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.

"Federal fire grants can help to provide valuable resources to first responders as they prepare to serve their community and answer the call," said Higgins, a member of the House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security. "I encourage local departments to review the tools available and apply."

The Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act provides $340 million in funding to assist fire departments, nonaffiliated ambulance and emergency medical service organizations. This funding is for operation and safety projects, vehicle acquisition, regional grants and state fire training academies.

All applications are submitted to the Department of Homeland Security and go through a nonpartisan, merit-based review ranked by factors established by a panel of fire service professionals.

To access the "Get Ready Guide" or for more information on the application process, visit www.fema.gov/firegrants or call the AFG help desk at 1-866-274-0960.
