Event seeks to raise funds for student scholarship assistance

The Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., has made access and affordability to excellent education hallmarks of his second year as president of Niagara University.

Raising critical scholarship dollars - the impetus behind NU's President's Dinner - will allow even more students to afford the comprehensive education, founded in the Catholic, Vincentian tradition, offered at Niagara.

This year's President's Dinner will take place Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Seneca Niagara Casino Hotel and Event Center.

Given Niagara University's continuing commitment to being a leader in the revitalization of the region, the goal of this annual fundraiser is to assist those seeking an exceptional education that blends professional training and the liberal arts.

NU's graduation and employment rates are among the best in the region; thus, the President's Dinner seeks to create more dynamic and transformational leaders who will help frame the future of Western New York.

Accordingly, three individuals known for their extraordinary professional success, as well as their remarkable philanthropic work in the local community, will be honored during the event.

Receiving the St. Vincent de Paul Award at this year's event will be Maryalice Demler, Class of 1986, anchor at WGRZ-TV Channel 2; and James Glynn, '57, chairman and CEO of Maid of the Mist. The accolade is conferred upon individuals "whose vision, accomplishments and good works reflect the life and ministry of St. Vincent de Paul."

Robert M. Bennett, chancellor emeritus of the New York State Board of Regents, will become the inaugural recipient of NU's Legacy of Service Award, recognizing his exemplary commitment to the community.

"The revitalization of Western New York is a top priority for Niagara University," Maher said. "Along with achieving great success in their professional fields of expertise, the three individuals being honored this year have demonstrated a profound inclination to join us in our mission of making a social and economic impact in this region."

For more than a decade, the President's Dinner has generated scholarship funding to benefit Niagara University students. During the 2013-14 academic year, 98 percent of undergraduate students received scholarship assistance from the university, totaling nearly $40 million.

John P. Rumschik, '77, a former member of Niagara University's board of trustees, and his wife, Barbara, are serving as the dinner's chair couple.

The "black tie preferred" event begins at 6 p.m. with cocktails and includes the award presentations, dinner and music.

Information on sponsorships of the event can be obtained at www.niagara.edu/PresidentsDinner or by calling 716-286-8778.

Tickets for the President's Dinner are $175 per person and may be reserved at the website above, or by contacting Niagara University's Center for Events and Management Development at 716-286-8705 or [email protected]. Tickets will not be available at the door.
